Drywall Installation
New walls and ceilings for additions, basements, remodels and commercial buildouts. Most walls take 1/2-inch board, and the code calls for 5/8-inch Type X on a garage ceiling with living space above it.

Tape, three coats and sanding take a joint from bare board to a Level 4 finish, the usual base for flat paint. Glossy or dark paint, or walls that catch strong side light, call for Level 5: a skim coat over the whole surface.
Drywall taping and finishing in Salt Lake CityRepair & Patching
Cracks, holes, nail pops, loose tape and water damage. A good repair starts with why it happened: a crack that keeps reopening over a door, or a stain that keeps spreading, needs its cause fixed before the patch.

Orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel or smooth. A patch only disappears when its texture and paint match the wall around it, so the mix is tried on scrap board first, and some walls are best re-textured whole.
Drywall texture matching in Salt Lake CityPopcorn Ceiling Removal
Popcorn ceilings in older homes may contain asbestos, so the ceiling is tested before anyone scrapes it. Utah's rules depend on when the home was built. Once the texture is off, the ceiling is skimmed smooth.

Design Drywall Utah hangs, tapes, textures and repairs drywall for homes and businesses from Salt Lake City along the Wasatch Front. We finish to the level the job calls for and match the texture already on your walls.
We take pride in clean prep, tight seams and finishes that hold up for years. On a full commercial buildout or a single-room remodel, we show up when we said we would, keep the site clean and leave walls ready for paint.
Drywall in Salt Lake City Homes
Three things about Salt Lake City change how drywall work goes here: how old the homes are, how dry and cold the year gets, and the ground under them.
Older homes and plaster
The Census Bureau puts the median year built at 1972 in Salt Lake City, against 1994 for Utah, and nearly one home in four dates from 1939 or earlier. Many have plaster walls, so a repair can mean patching drywall into plaster.
Dry summers, cold winters
July afternoons average about 21 percent humidity, so compound dries fast and thick coats can crack at the edges. January lows average about 24°F, and USG says finishing should happen at 55°F or warmer, so winter jobs need the heat on.
When the ground moves
The magnitude 5.7 Magna earthquake of March 18, 2020 was the largest along the Wasatch Front since 1847. A crack over a door that keeps reopening can mean the house is still moving, which is why a drywall repair starts with the cause.

Drywall Questions from Salt Lake City Homeowners
Do you work on homes and businesses?
Yes, both. Houses, basements and condos, plus offices, shops and other commercial spaces, in Salt Lake City and along the Wasatch Front.
Which towns do you serve?
Salt Lake City and the towns around it, from Ogden and Layton in the north to Lehi, Orem and Provo in the south, plus Park City. Each town has its own page in the Service Areas list below.
How does a free estimate work?
Call (801) 735-8491 or send the estimate form with what you need: the room, what is damaged or what you are building, and the texture on the walls now. It is free, and there is no obligation to go ahead.
Do I need a permit to finish a basement in Salt Lake City?
Usually. Salt Lake City Building Services says adding or removing walls usually needs a permit and interior demolition always does, and owners may pull permits for the home they live in. Other towns set their own rules, which each town's page covers.
Is it safe to scrape a popcorn ceiling?
Not until it has been tested. Before a contractor renovates, Utah's Division of Air Quality requires an asbestos inspection of the work area in homes built before 1981 and one that covers ceiling texture in homes built from 1981 through 1991. Houses of up to four units built on or after January 1, 1992 are exempt.
Can a patch match the texture I already have?
Usually, with the mix tried on scrap board first. USG's handbook notes that a touch-up that blends completely is very hard to get, so on some walls the better answer is to re-texture the whole wall or ceiling.
What level of finish do my walls need?
Level 4 is the usual base for flat paint. Glossy paint, dark colors, or strong side light from a window call for Level 5, a thin skim coat over the whole surface, as the Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard describes.
